The process of rebuilding in February 1998:
Croatia only regained its authority over its full territory and thus, over Laslovo, on January 15, 1998.
Until now the only serious work started was the clearing of the village of landmines. During the war the defenders planted many mines, but it isn't these that are the main concern. It is rather the many granates that did not explode. Today approximately two thirds of the territory is already cleared. Under this we mean that the gardens, the outskirts aren't cleared yet, only the streets, the ruins of the houses, and their immediate surroundings. Only what is minimally required for starting the rebuilding process.
Approximately 80 % of the refugees want to return and they handed in their requests during the autumn of 1997.
The houses that can be renovated (and we must say, there are few) will be financed by the State. Instead of those ruined new ones will be built, also on state money. In the latter case the footing area will be 35 square meters, and additional 10 sq. meters for each person. A fridge, a gas stove, a table and for each person a chair and a bed will be given.
The rebuilding is due to start around March or April.
All the above mentioned things are important, but are far from enough.
Much more is needed. The question is how the people will get, be given
these things for we must not forget that we are mostly speaking of people
who had lost everything and that many of them are old.
